Venus breezes through, Flipkens out in Florianopolis

Former world number one Venus Williams cruised to victory in the opening round of the WTA Brasil Tennis Cup in Florianopolis on Tuesday.

Williams, now ranked 20th in the world, needed just 79 minutes to beat Croatia's Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-3 6-3 following a rain delay on Monday.

The American top seed hit three aces and won 75 percent of points behind her first serve, while Lucic-Baroni was left to rue seven double faults.

Meanwhile, Russia's Olga Puchkova caused the upset of the day, defeating Belgian third seed Kirsten Flipkens 2-6 6-4 6-4.

Slovakian fifth seed Magdalena Rybarikova was more fortunate, accounting for Japan's Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-3 6-0.

French seventh seed Kristina Mladenovic prevailed 6-3 6-4 over Britain's Anne Keothavong, while local wildcard Beatriz Haddad Maia overcame Connie Hsu of the United States 6-1 6-2.

Spaniard Garbine Muguruza Blanco brushed aside German Kristina Barrois 6-2 6-2, and Hungary's Timea Babos won 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 against Russian Valeria Savinykh.

Germany's Tatjana Malek earned a 6-4 6-2 win over local hope Teliana Pereira, while in the day's final match Slovakian Jana Cepelova upset eight seed Annika Beck 7-6 (8-6) 6-4.
