Murray revels in ending hoodoo

25 January 2013 17:35

Andy Murray was thrilled to finally beat Roger Federer at a grand slam in a memorable Australian Open semi-final on Friday.

The 25-year-old outlasted the 17-time grand slam champion to win 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-7 (2-7) 6-2 and set up a mouth-watering final with world number one Novak Djokovic.

The win was Murray's first over Federer in a grand slam after four attempts, a result that came as a great relief to the Scot, who looked the better player for the majority of the match.

"Yeah, I mean, it's satisfying obviously," he said after the epic four-hour battle.

"You know, I've obviously lost some tough matches against him in slams. So to win one, especially the way that it went tonight, yeah, was obviously nice.

"I'm sure both of us will play each other again in slams, so it will help having won once against him."

Despite playing some of his best tennis for the tournament, Murray said he did not feel completely comfortable throughout the encounter.

Murray twice went one set ahead of Federer and was twice pegged back by the former world number one, the Swiss winning two tie-breakers.

But the reigning US Open champion, who had a chance to serve for the match in the fourth set, refused to let his failures affect him as he blitzed his way through the final set, a response he was pleased with.

"I wouldn't say I dominated the match; didn't necessarily feel that way. I obviously had more breaks of serve and stuff by the end. Because of that I assume I probably would have won significantly more points. I don't know, though, exactly," he said.

"But, yeah, I thought I did a good job tonight. I think I did all the things I needed to do. I did them well. Even, like I say, after the second and fourth sets, which were tough to lose, because, you know, I wasn't comfortable, but I was in ... good positions in both sets.

"To lose them was tough. I was just happy with the way I responded after both those sets. The beginning of the fifth set was the part of the match that I was most pleased with."
