Nadal primed for return in Abu Dhabi

Rafael Nadal is targeting a winning comeback to tennis when he returns to the court at the Mubadala Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi.

The Spaniard has not played a competitive match since a surprise second-round loss to Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon in June due to a knee injury.

Nadal only started practicing again in November but is confident his body will hold up for the exhibition event starting on December 27, as well as the Australian Open a couple of weeks later.

The 26-year-old missed the 2012 London Olympics and the US Open due to his injury and tournament organisers in Melbourne were concerned about the drawcard potentially sitting out the first major of the year.

But Nadal's announcement on Tuesday, which was posted on his official Facebook and Twitter pages, indicated that the 11-time grand slam winner will participate in the Australian Open.

"Can't wait to get back on court in Abu Dhabi at the end of the month," Nadal wrote.

"I won the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in 2010 and 2011 - would love to get my hands on the trophy again this year!"

Nadal has missed the past six months due to a partial tear of the patellar tendon in his left knee.

Nadal has won the Australian Open once, when he claimed a five-set epic against Roger Federer in 2009.
