Strong field for Sydney International

6 December 2012 03:43

Nine of the world's top 20 tennis players are set to compete in the Sydney International in January 2013.

The exciting announcement came on Thursday, with seven top 10 women and two top 10 men featuring in the field.

Heading the list of women competing in the event will be local hope and 2011 US Open champion, Samantha Stosur.

The world No.9 – who recently won her third Newcombe Medal, awarded to Australia's most outstanding tennis player - finished 2012 as a top-10 player for the third year in a row.

And Stosur – who lost the 2005 Sydney International final to compatriot Alicia Molik – is excited about competing in the event again.

"Receiving the Newcombe Medal for the third time is a great honour and it provides great motivation heading into the next few weeks of training as I prepare to face a tough field of top 10 players in Sydney," Stosur said.

Joining Stosur in the women's field are Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska (No.4), German Angelique Kerber (No.5), Italian Sara Errani (No.6), China's Li Na (No.7), Czech Petra Kvitova (No.8) and Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki (No.10).

Serbian Jelena Jankovic and Russian Maria Kirilenko will also compete in the event.

In the men's side of the draw, French duo Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (No.8) and Richard Gasquet (No.10) will be the star attractions.

American John Isner (No.14), Spaniard Fernando Verdasco (No.24) and Australia No.1 Marinko Matosevic (No.49) will feature as well.
