Henman, Ivanisevic to clash in London

6 December 2012 00:57

Tennis veterans Tim Henman and Goran Ivanisevic will spark an old rivalry at London's Statoil Masters event this weekend.

Great Britain's Henman won the AEGON Masters title at the Royal Albert Hall last year, beating Thomas Enqvist, and he began this tournament in the same fashion, edging out the Swede 6-7 6-3 11-9.

Henman and Ivanisevic will meet in Group A of the tournament on Saturday, which is part of the ATP Champions Tour.

Others participating in the Champions Tour event include Fabrice Santoro, Mark Philippoussis and Carlos Moya.

The match-up between Henman, 38, and Ivanisevic, 41, is a repeat of the memorable Wimbledon semi-final from 2001 - a match the Croatian won in five sets, before claiming his sole Grand Slam as a wildcard entry with victory over Pat Rafter in the final.

Ahead of their re-match some 11 years on, Henman said the '01 semi-final was the toughest period in his professional career.

"It was a great match ... it was probably the most difficult match I played in my career because it was obviously over three days, we had two rain delays, we had to come back and it was hard, being the semis of Wimbledon," the former world number four said.

And Ivanisevic said there was no chance of their re-match going beyond a day, given there is a roof over the venue this time around.

"It's not going to be a three day match because we have a roof," he said.

"We're going to finish the match and it's always fun to play Tim. I respect him a lot; we had so many great matches, especially that one in Wimbledon. Probably I think that one and the final were probably the two most special matches that I played in my life."
