Giants select Saquon Barkley second overall

27 April 2018 02:42

The New York Giants landed arguably the best overall player in the NFL Draft, deciding not to go with a quarterback as they selected running back Saquon Barkley with the second pick.

Even with USC quarterback Sam Darnold still on the board after the Cleveland Browns selected Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield first overall, the Giants still plumped for Penn State star Barkley.

Seen as a generational talent at the running back spot, Barkley racked up 3,843 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns on the ground at Penn State, while also adding 1,195 yards and eight touchdowns as a receiver.

But, as talented as Barkley is, there will continue to be questions over the quarterback position, the Giants seemingly deciding the 37-year-old Eli Manning is still the best man for the job despite a hugely disappointing 2017 season in which the Giants went 3-13.

Manning threw  for 3,468 yards with 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, struggling to throw downfield in a year that saw the Giants beset by injuries at receiver.

With Barkley joining a supporting cast that also features Odell Beckham Jr, Sterling Shepard and tight end Evan Engram, there is little excuse for Manning not to be successful.
