Regular Season:

Format:

18 teams, each plays the others twice - home and away - for a total of 34 games each, over 34 game weeks.



Scoring points:

3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.



Table order:

1. points won; 2.* lesser number of points lost; 2. total goal difference; 3. total goals scored; 4. points in head-to-head matches; 5. goal difference in hth matches; 6. away goals in hth matches; 7.** play-off; 8. draw.

** - only for deciding champion, relegation, international competitions and play-offs qualification.



Qualification for UEFA competitions:

1-2 place: UEFA Champions League qualifiers

3 place: UEFA Europa League qualifiers

4-7 place: enter Europa League Play-off for 1 place * in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers **

8 place: possible Europa League Play-off for 1 place in UEFA Europa League qualifiers (depends on KNVB Beker outcome) **

* - the teams, participating in the Europa League Play-off contest 2 places in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers if KNVB Beker winner qualifies for the UEFA Champions League.

** - if the KNVB Beker winner finishes 3rd-7th, then it doesn't participate in the Europa League Play-off, and the 8th placed teams enters in the play-off instead.



Relegation from the league:

16-17 place: enter Play-offs 1/2 with 8 Eerste Divisie teams for 2 places in Eredivisie

18 place: relegated to Eerste Divisie



Promotion to the league:

1 team from Eerste Divisie

2 more teams from Eerste Divisie possible to promote through Play-offs 1/2





Europa League Play-off:

Format:

4 teams from the Regular Season contest one or two (see above) places in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers in a knockout format.



Semi-finals:

Teams are paired according to their standings from the Regular Season:

highest placed team vs lowest placed team;

second highest placed team vs third highest placed team.

Winners are decided over two legs.

The higher placed teams from the Regular Season host the second legs.



Final:

The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming the Europa League Play-off winner.

Winner is decided over two legs.

The higher placed team from the Regular Season hosts the second leg.



Tie-breakers for the Promotional Play-off ties:

1. aggregate score from the two legs, 2. away goals, 3. extra time, 4. penalties.
