Regular Season:

Format:

33 teams, divided into 3 groups of 8 teams each (Groups A, C and D) and 1 group of 9 teams (Group B) on regional basis.

In Groups A, C and D each team plays against all the teams from its own group twice - home and away - for a total of 14 games each, over 14 game weeks.

In Group B each team plays against all the teams from its own group three times - of which at least once home and once away - for a total of 16 games each, over 18 game weeks.



Scoring points:

3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.



Table order:

1. points won; 2. total goal difference; 3. total goals scored; 4. points in head-to-head matches; 5. goal difference in hth matches; 6. goals scored in hth matches; 7. away goals in hth matches; 8. play-off (only for deciding the promotion play-offs participation); 9. draw.



Relegation to the league:

2 teams from 3. Deild



Qualification for Promotion Play-off:

1-2 place of each group: qualify for Promotion Play-off

Format:

8 teams from the Regular Season contest the 4. Deild champion and two places in 2017 3. Deild in a knockout format.



Quarter-finals:

Teams are paired according to their Regular Season standings:

2nd in Group D vs 1st in Group C (match 1);

2nd in Group C vs 1st in Group B (match 2);

2nd in Group B vs 1st in Group A (match 3);

2nd in Group A vs 1st in Group D (match 4).

Winners are decided over two legs.

The group winners from the Regular Season host the second legs.



Semi-finals:

Teams are paired as follows:

winner match 2 vs winner match 4;

winner match 3 vs winner match 1.

Winners are decided over two legs.

The winners of matches 1 and 4 host the second legs.



Tie-breakers for the knockout matches over two legs:

1. aggregate score from the two legs, 2. away goals, 3. extra time, 4. penalties.



3rd Place:

The two Semi-finals losers meet each other to contest 3-4 place.

Winner is decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.



Final:

The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming 4. Deild champion.

Winner is decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

The match is played at a neutral venue.
