Commentary

Minute   Description
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
This tie is beautifully poised after a dramatic second half. Roma will be buoyed by their second half performance and a great result. Di Francesco’s side face three crucial Serie A fixtures before they head to Portugal for the second leg. Porto will be pleased they got an away goal, but this defeat continues a disappointing few weeks. The reigning Primeira Liga champions have some key matches in their title defence, including a clash with Benfica, before they host the return leg.
90'+5 FULL-TIME: ROMA 2-1 PORTO
90'+3 Andre Pereira carries the ball in the Roma half but eventually loses it. Roma fail to keep the ball for long and Telles crosses. He does not beat the first man.
90'+1 With the opportunity for a long throw into the box, Telles opts to go short and get the ball back for a cross. He fails to deliver the ball and Roma get a chance to counter.
90' There will be a minimum of five added minutes.
Kluivert replaces El Shaarawy for the final few minutes.
88' El Shaarawy receives a yellow card for a late challenge on Felipe.
87' Potential match-winner Zaniolo comes off for Santon as Roma look to hold on for the win.
Hernani rides a challenge on the right and crosses. Florenzi calmly chests the ball back to Mirante.
85' Nzonzi feeds Dzeko for a Roma counter and the striker plays in El Shaarawy. Militao gets back to push off El Shaarawy and end the attack.
84' Hernani replaces Otavio, who had a very quiet evening.
83' Nzonzi is introduced for Pellegrini to add fresh legs into midfield.
81' Dzeko makes another good run behind the defence and looks to have an opportunity to create something before he is closed down and forced backwards.
79' Soares attempts a first-time shot from the edge of the area and gets it all wrong. The ball balloons up in the air and spins down to Lopez for a peculiar assist.
LOPEZ MAKES IT 2-1! Soares' sliced shot drops to Lopez in the Roma box. He is under no pressure and puts it past Mirante to get Porto a crucial away goal.
76' ZANIOLO AGAIN! 2-0 ROMA! Dzeko breaks into the Porto half, creating space for a right-footed shot from 25 yards. Casillas cannot get to the ball and it bounces off the post. Zaniolo remains calm to pass the ball into an empty net.
Fernando is brought off. Andre Pereira comes on in his place.
74' Herrera is shown a yellow card for a high challenge on De Rossi.
72' Roma sit very deep straight away after scoring. Lopez gets a half-chance in the area and it is blocked.
70' Dzeko gets the assist for laying the ball off to Zaniolo in the area.
GOAAAAL! ZANIOLO PUTS ROMA AHEAD! Zaniolo quickly moves the ball onto his right foot and creates space to shoot under pressure from Telles. His shot goes across goal and past Casillas into the far corner.
68' Brahimi is not moving well at all and has to come off. Lopez replaces him.
Both teams are arguing on the touchline because Brahimi was down again when Roma were attacking. Conceicao wanted Roma to put the ball out of play and is furious that they played on.
64' De Rossi chips a pass to Dzeko from a free-kick, but Felipe leaps highest to nod it away. Porto's central defenders have been excellent so far.
61' Pepe chips an optimistic long ball up to Militao. It is well-directed, but the flag goes up for offside. Militao also handled the ball.
59' Herrera finds Militao in space on the right, giving the right-back time to cross. His delivery is poor, though, and it is easily cleared.
56' Dzeko's flick on falls to Pellegrini. The midfielder tries to thread El Shaarawy in, but Militao intercepts.
55' Pellegrini beautifully controls the ball on his thigh in midfield and carries it past a couple of opponents. He quickly shifts it out to El Shaarawy, who goes for the spectacular on his right from range. It goes into the crowd.
53' Roma have played much better football in the second half so far and the crowd have responded after being quiet for much of the first 45 minutes.
51' Dzeko controls the ball perfectly in midfield yet again. He is given time to turn and dribbles up the pitch before misjudging a pass and losing possession.
47' Telles charges all the way down the left, beating a sliding Florenzi. The Porto left-back crosses near the byline and it bounces into the arms of Mirante.
46' Dzeko is fouled by Felipe near the halfway line after another excellent touch to bring a long pass under control.
Porto get us back underway for the second half.
Roma were unimpressive in the first half and it might not be long before Di Francesco looks to make changes. The midfield was ineffective as Pellegrini and Cristante did not offer enough going forward. Pastore could come on early in the second half for some extra creativity. Porto will be happy to be level, though they have not posed much of a threat. Conceicao would be happy with a draw but will be keen to get an away goal in the second half.
45'+1 HALF-TIME: ROMA 0-0 PORTO
45' There will be one added minute.
44' Fernando plays the ball up to Brahimi as Porto try to build a counter. Florenzi reads the situation well and steps in for an interception.
42' Cristante sweetly strikes a half-volley pass to find El Shaarawy in space down the inside-left channel. El Shaarawy tries to move the ball onto his right but is tackled.
40' Pellegrini leaps to flick the ball on to Dzeko from a goal kick. The former Manchester City man loses the ball almost immediately and Porto pass the ball around at the back before an overly ambitious pass from Pepe ends up with Mirante.
36' Zaniolo wins another free-kick after some shirt pulling by Telles. Roma spread the play out to Kolarov and his cross is blocked for a throw.
35' Dzeko rises highest to win a header from a corner, but he mistimes his jump and his effort goes well over the bar.
34' Florenzi is lucky to avoid a foul throw as he gives the ball to Zaniolo, who is fouled around 30 yards from goal. Pellegrini swings the free-kick into the area, but it's a few inches too high for Manolas.
32' Otavio attempts an ambitious pass to Fernando. Fazio does well to hold off the youngster and calmly plays the ball back into midfield.
28' Roma are focusing a lot of their attacking play down the left. Pellegrini joins Kolarov and El Shaarawy this time. He crosses but does not get the necessary elevation and it is headed clear.
26' Telles cuts out a short Florenzi pass down the wing. Porto give away a throw.
24' Porto have a free-kick around 40 yards from goal which Telles takes. It was a simple crossing situation, but the left-back mishits it horribly and it drifts way over Mirante's goal for a goal kick.
22' Zaniolo wins a free-kick in the centre circle as he tries to turn with the ball. Roma play it into Dzeko but Porto pressure him quickly and he loses the ball.
20' Brahimi dribbles past a lunging De Rossi on the halfway line and makes his way into the final third. Roma do well to get back behind the ball and force Porto to build from the back again.
19' Dzeko drops into his half and is tripped by Soares as he receives the ball. The Roma man exaggerates the foul a little and the referee gives Soares a talking to.
17' Roma get themselves in a mess at the back after a sliced De Rossi clearance. The ball loops into the air and other attempts to clear it are poor. It ends when Otavino miscontrols and Fazio boots the ball up the field.
16' Danilo Pereira carries the ball into midfield after a hard challenge on Zaniolo. The Porto midfielder hesitates in possession, losing the opportunity for a counter.
14' Cristante is unimpressed with the decision to give Porto a throw. His complaints are brief and Roma quickly win the ball back in midfield.
12' Roma break quickly after the failed set piece and Dzeko delivers a dangerous ball which Felipe nearly puts into his own net.
11' Instead of crossing from the set piece, Porto run a training ground routine and hit an aerial pass for Herrera to strike first-time. He is quickly closed down and does not get a shot off.
10' Zaniolo and Florenzi break up a Porto passing move, robbing Brahimi out on the flank. The visitors quickly win it back and Fernando wins a free-kick out on the left after a clumsy challenge from Florenzi.
8' De Rossi plays a first-time pass to Dzeko in midfield and the Roma striker is fouled.
6' Fernando chases a ball down the channel and hits it across the area. Brahimi arrives late and is unable to beat Florenzi to it.
5' El Shaarawy dances past Militao in the area after an error from Felipe. He cuts the ball back, but Porto scramble to clear it before the hosts can get a shot off.
3' Porto are pressing high early on. Fazio and Manolas cannot find an easy pass into midfield.
2' Telles dribbles the ball on the left flank and loses possession.
1' De Rossi sends the ball forward straight after the kick-off and it sails out of play.
The referee blows his whistle and we are underway!
Porto’s starting XI have amassed 440 Champions League appearances (including tonight), 116 more than Roma’s starting team (324 CL apps).
SUBS: Hernani, Maxi Pereira, Adrian Lopez, Andre Pereira, Oliver Torres, Bruno Costa, Vana Alves.
PORTO (4-1-4-1): Iker Casillas; Eder Militao, Felipe, Pepe, Alex Telles; Danilo Pereira; Fernando, Hector Herrera, Otavio, Yacine Brahimi; Tiquinho Soares.
SUBS: Steven Nzonzi, Davide Santon, Ivan Marcano, Javier Pastore, Robin Olsen, Juan Jesus, Justin Kluivert.
ROMA (4-3-3): Antonio Mirante; Alessandro Florenzi, Kostas Manolas, Federico Fazio, Aleksandar Kolarov; Lorenzo Pellegrini, Daniele De Rossi, Bryan Cristante; Nicolo Zaniolo, Edin Dzeko, Stephan El Shaarawy.
Porto come into this riding a long unbeaten run, having not lost a match since October. Five straight wins to end the group stage saw the Portuguese side cruise to the top of Group D. Goal scoring has been a concern of late, however, resulting in three draws in their last five league matches, which has seen Benfica close the gap at the top of the table.
Roma have not been at their best of late, though they have only lost one of their last eight. Defeats to Real Madrid and Viktoria Plzen in their two group matches saw the Serie A side finish second in Group G. A good win against Chievo at the weekend kept Roma just a point outside the top four in Serie A. They will be confident of recording a positive result in Italy’s capital this evening.
Hello and welcome to the Champions League last 16 clash between Roma and Porto.
