Commentary

Minute   Description
So thanks to the super-sub rescue of Olivier Giroud, Arsenal are now level on points with fourth-placed Liverpool in the Premier League table, whereas Southampton are still without back to back home wins in 2017. It was very unfortunate for the Saints who troubled Arsenal many times on the counter and they could've been 2-0 up in the first five minutes, had Charlie Austin's second effort bounced off the right side of the post. But Arsene Wenger made key attacking changes late in the game and the Gunners worked patiently for Giroud's equaliser to steal a lucky point.
90'+4 It's all over as the referee blows his whistle to call and end to today's enthralling, fast-paced game as Arsenal rescue a point thanks to Giroud's late header.
90'+3 Arsenal could have had a chance to steal three points. Kolasinac swings a ball in from the right but Ramsey can't control his touch as the ball is poked towards goal with little place and Forster collects.
90'+2 Can Southampton retake their lead and find a winner with moments to spare? Bertrand breaks away for the Saints but he is stopped in his tracks.
90'+1 The fourth official indicates four minutes of added time.
90' Yellow card Jack Wilshere
88' Super-sub Giroud is in the right place at the right time once again for Arsenal. Sanchez picks him out perfectly in the middle of a host of Southampton bodies. All Giroud needed to do was turn his head and the ball bounces beyond Forster's reach for the goal Arsenal were desperately searching for.
Assist Alexis Alejandro Sánchez Sánchez
Substitution Dušan Tadić Steven Davis
87' But they can't keep Giroud from scoring as he heads in to level the scores!
Southampton seem content to mark Arsenal close as they try and defend their lead.
86' Substitution Charlie Austin Manolo Gabbiadini
84' Sanchez takes a free-kick after Romeu fouled on the edge of the area. He curls the ball to Forster's right and the Southampton goalkeeper leaps spectacularly to parry the ball away.
Yellow card Oriol Romeu Vidal
82' Sanchez flicks a tame shot on the edge of Southampton's area and it's a poor decision as Southampton break away. The ball is played through to Charlie Austin but the assistant's flag is raised for off-side.
Yellow card Jack Stephens. Stephens is booked for time-wasting.
78' James Ward-Prowse aims the resulting free-kick into the box towards Virgil van Dijk but it is too far for the Dutch international.
Bellerin earns himself a booking, the first of the game, for pulling back Boufal.
76' Bellerin and Austin tussle for the ball in midfield and the referee awards Southampton a free-kick.
74' Virgil van Dijk takes a free-kick after being tripped by Giroud. It's a wasted opportunity as his delivery fails to find any man on the pitch and bounces out for a goal-kick.
Substitution Nathan Redmond Sofiane Boufal
72' Danny Welbeck's cross from the right hand side is wild and it falls to Ward-Prowse, who flicks the ball over his marker and tries to release Charlie Austin on the break but his touch is a bad one.
Substitution Alexandre Lacazette Olivier Giroud
69' Substitution Granit Xhaka Jack Wilshere
67' Another shot doesn't fall kindly for Arsenal as Monreal's shot is off-target.
65' Southampton are holding their lines very well against Arsenal and they are rewarded when they break away. Koscielny fails to deal with a header as the ball is played through to Bertrand by Austin. However, he cannot get a good touch as his effort trickles wide of the post.
64' Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his attack as Danny Welbeck comes on for defender Per Mertesacker.
61' That was close for Southampton! Bertrand rolls the ball across the Arsenal box as it sets up nicely for Oriol Romeu but the former Spain youth international rattles the crossbar.
59' Kolasinac and Lacazette work together again with Monreal in support but none of the three Arsenal men can find their feet as Southampton steal possession and break away. The ball is run by Tadic down the left but he wastefully clips a cross into the safe hands of Petr Cech.
57' Lacazette plays a nice one-two with Kolasinac but his path is blocked and the ball goes out for a corner. The resulting corner from Bellerin is dealt with well by the Southampton defence as Ward-Prowse heads away.
55' Hjobjerg plays a great ball across midfield to Bertrand but the former Chelsea player cannot do the same as Saints lose possession.
53' Aaron Ramsey replies with a shot of his own as he finds space to shoot across goal but he doesn't have any success.
52' Redmond unleashes a shot from range but it doesn't have enough pace to trouble Cech.
50' The second half hasn't exactly burst into life like the first half where Southampton took the lead through Charlie Austin.
48' Arsenal's midfield four play the ball from left to right and then back across midfield as they edge closer to Southampton's area. They keep the ball well until a cross from Kolasinac is headed away.
46' We're back in play at St.Mary's. Tadic restarts the game from the centre-spot.
Sanchez and Lacazette make the first break. The Chilean chips over a ball but it is cleared away and Southampton counter. However, their attack is suddenly stopped.
Have you caught your breath after that pulsating first half? There will be more fast-paced football to come your way shortly.
So Charlie Austin's early goal separates the two sides at the moment, but Arsenal have had chances through Ramsey and Lacazette, and not taken them. But can they take charge in the second half? Stay with us for more end to end action no doubt.
45'+1 Arsenal have one last chance to level the scores before the break. Sanchez has a free-kick but his delivery goes too far wide and the referee blows his whistle for half-time.
45' There's a minute of added time to come.
44' Xhaka gives the ball away to Austin in midfield but fortunately the Gunners get the ball back despite calls for handball. The referee says no.
43' Arsenal give the ball away again but this time a cross from Redmond is covered by Cech.
42' Arsenal are being very patient with their build-up play but it comes at a cost as Redmond steals the ball and breaks away. He plays in Austin, who swings a ball in from the left but it's headed away.
40' Bellerin has time with the ball on the right and he picks out a pass to Lacazette but the Frenchman's shot sails high and wide.
38' Arsenal play the ball patiently from the back. Sanchez and Lacazette link up but the final ball is knocked loose on the edge of the box and cleared away from danger.
36' Southampton attack down the left again through Bertrand and Hjobjerg but they still cannot find an end product as the ball is cleared for a throw-in. They switch to the right hand side to try and unlock the Arsenal back line.
34' Back to back attacks from both sides. Ozil can't find a finishing touch on Southampton's end while Xhaka stops Redmond in his tracks on Southampton's response.
32' Great point blank save from Fraser Forster. Ramsey gets a shot off on the edge of the box and Forster dives low to his left to parry it away. Big chance for Arsenal.
30' End to end action here at St.Mary's as Arsenal try to counter attack again. Kolasinac swings in a cross but it comes to nothing.
28' There's a scramble in the box after a corner and Southampton try to poke a shot past Cech but the Arsenal keeper gathers the ball safely.
26' Cech forces a ball out for a corner after an inswinging free-kick from James Ward Prowse.
24' Hector Bellerin skips through the Southampton defence with a clever piece of skill but Virgil van Dijk clears the ball out for a corner.
22' Ramsey has a shot on goal using his chest to control and unleash a shot on the turn but again, Forster has all bases covered in the Southampton goal.
19' Southampton look shaky after that Arsenal break-away as they lose the ball in Arsenal's half but luckily, another counter is stopped by the referee as Xhaka is pulled back for a handball, despite complaining the ball fell on his shoulder.
17' Arsenal break away with a three on two opportunity. Sanchez and Lacazette play the ball between each other but Hjobjerg tracks back well to deny Lacazette a scoring opportunity.
16' Xhaka lifts a ball over the top of the Southampton defence. Lacazette brings the ball down with control and turns to shoot at goal but it's straight into the hands of Forster.
14' Mesut Ozil swings a ball into Southampton's box but it is headed away by Hojbjerg.
12' Southampton and Arsenal are battling in midfield but no one can find a way through. Scrappy stuff.
7' Austin smacks the ball off the post after a timely cross from Nathan Redmond.
4' Tadic breaks through again. He's becoming a nightmare for the Arsenal defence. He bursts down the right, cuts in and unleashes a shot but it's comfortably saved by Cech.
3' A determined run from Tadic to the edge of Arsenal's area and he clips a ball through to Austin. The former QPR man composes himself to fire the ball into the top left corner.
Assist Dušan Tadić
2' Charlie Austin scores! What a start for Southampton!
1' James Ward-Prowse is a little too eager with his through ball in midfield as Dusan Tadic is flagged for off-side.
James Ward-Prowse has a free-kick on the left side of Arsenal's area. It swings in towards goal leaving Cech no choice but to punch it over his net for a corner.
We are under way at St.Mary's. Arsenal start the game, attacking left to right.
Kick-off is just moments away. Stay right where you are to follow all the action.
Striker Charlie Austin may be Southampton's good luck charm today as the 28 year-old has scored in seven of his last 10 starts for the club. And when he has scored in his last two appearances against the Gunners, but that was when he played for QPR and they lost on both occasions.
Southampton have only won one of their last six league games and a win today would give them their first set of consecutive home wins this year. The Saints have scored just 23 goals in 26 league matches since the start of April, and just 10 in their last 15 home league matches.
There's some interesting stats behind today's game. Arsenal have won seven of their last 10 Premier League games. However, they have only won two of their last seven away from home. Arsenal beat the Saints 2-0 on their travels in May but haven't won successive away matches at St.Mary's since 1997.
There's no Theo Walcott for Arsenal as Per Mertesacker comes into the Gunner's defensive line for the injured Shkodran Mustafi. Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Cech, Bellerin, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Monreal, Kolasinac, Xhaka, Ramsey, Sanchez, Ozil, Lacazette. Subs: Ospina, Wilshere, Giroud, Iwobi, Welbeck, Maitland-Niles, Coquelin.
The teams are in and here's how Southampton are lining up this afternoon. Southampton XI (3-4-3): Forster, Yoshida, Stephens, Van Dijk, Redmond, Bertrand, Romeu, Hojbjerg, Ward-Prowse, Tadic, Austin. Subs: McCarthy, Hoedt, Davis, Lemina, Boufal, Gabbiadini, Pied.
