Commentary

Minute   Description
Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
Southampton complete a hammering of Everton this afternoon as a brace from Charlie Austin along with strikes from Dusan Tadic and Steven Davis guide them back to winning ways. The Toffees' miserable week continues as they concede nine goals in the space of four days, leaving them in a perilous position in the bottom three of the Premier League. Everton's hierarchy must act to appoint a permanent successor to Ronald Koeman to get the club back on track.
FULL-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 4-1 EVERTON
90'+4 The referee ends the contest.
90'+3 OVER! Ward-Prowse lifts a corner into the box that Everton only half clear towards the edge of the box. Hojbjerg goes for the strike from the edge of the box, only to blast his effort over the bar.
90' There will be four minutes of added time.
87' Ward-Prowse raids forward into the right inside channel before teeing up Davis for his strike.
GOALLLLLLL!!!! DAVIS MAKES IT FOUR! Southampton pour on the agony for the Toffees as he collects Ward-Prowse's lay-off on the edge of the box and curls an effort beyond the reach of Pickford into the top corner.
86' Yoshida replaces Boufal.
85' OVER! Sigurdsson finds space in the final third and with few options around him he pulls the trigger, only to fire his strike well over the bar.
83' SAVE! Long gets the better of Jagielka on the left flank and breaks through on goal before shooting from a tight angle. However, his goal drought continues as Pickford turns the ball past the post.
82' Sigurdsson turns on the edge of the box and he goes for the strike, but his effort is saved with ease by Forster.
80' Long replaces Austin for the hosts.
78' Lemina replaces Tadic for the home side.
76' Vlasic raids to the edge of the box for the Toffees as he looks to have an instant impact, but he offload goes nowhere near a team-mate and allows the Saints to break.
75' Vlasic replaces Keane for the visitors.
74' Keane is down on the deck for the Toffees and appears to be in trouble. He might have to make way here.
72' Lookman breaks into the final third and he has time to pull the trigger. However, Cedric gets back at the forward before he can shoot and sweep up the danger.
70' The urgency has not been there from the Toffees since conceding the third goal. Unsworth may have to go to his bench again to get a response from his team.
68' Southampton continue to press men forward in the final third in their hunt for more goals. The visitors are hanging in there just, although another goal could start a rout.
66' Everton need to get a foothold back in the game as the Saints are manoeuvring the ball around the pitch with ease.
64' Cedric almost commits a costly error as he loses out to Calvert-Lewin in the final third, but he atones for his error as the striker cannot take the ball in stride.
Lookman replaces Mirallas for the visitors.
63' Pickford takes the matter out of his defender's hands as he comes off his line to claim Ward-Prowse's cross.
62' Kenny brings down Tadic and the Saints will have another opportunity to swing a cross into the box. Ward-Prowse will send the ball in from the right.
60' Southampton are all over the Toffees in the final third. Cedric lines up a strike from distance, but his effort is deflected behind by Williams. Everton need to sort themselves out at the back otherwise this could get out of hand.
58' Tadic raids into the left inside channel and sends a peach of a cross for Austin to head home.
GOALLLLLLLLL!!!! AUSTIN NOTCHES HIS SECOND! It's almost a carbon coby of his first goal as the striker gets between Williams and Keane at the back to head home from close range. This time it was Tadic in the channel to lift a pinpoint cross into the middle and Austin did not disappoint with his finish, nodding the ball past a helpless Pickford.
55' Ambition gets the better of Bertrand in the final third as he goes for a strike from distance, only to hammer his effort well over the bar.
52' Bertrand's persistence pays off as he lifts a fine cross into the box for Austin to convert.
GOALLLLLLLLLLL!!!! AUSTIN FINDS THE NET! Southampton regain the lead as Austin heads home from close range. Boufal sent a good ball into the channel for Betrand, who whipped a powerful ball towards the near post. Austin edged ahead of Keane to glance the ball at goal and it was past Pickford before the keeper could react.
51' Tadic slides Bertrand in down the left inside channel, but the full-backs takes a poor first touch and it allows Williams to slide in and clear the ball out for throw-in.
49' Ward-Prowse fires the ball low into the box towards Austin at the near post, but the striker loses out to Keane, who clears the danger for the visitors.
48' Boufal drifts into the left channel and wins a free-kick for the home side as Gueye pulls him back. Ward-Prowse will lift the ball into the box.
47' Tadic and Betrand link up down the left flank, but the full-back sends his delivery out for a goal-kick.
46' We're back underway at St Mary's.
Everton were woeful for the opening 44 minutes of the match, but Gylfi Sigurdsson's strike just before the break has given them life in the contest against Southampton. The Saints took the lead through Dusan Tadic's strike in the 11th minute and had openings to pull further ahead. However, they paid for their lack of clinical edge by the Iceland international to level the scores with his stunning effort.
HALF-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 EVERTON
45'+2 Southampton probe before the break, but can't make headway into the box before the referee blows for half-time.
45' There will be two minutes of added time.
Calvert-Lewin picks out Sigurdsson on the edge of the box, allowing the midfielder to level the scores.
GOALLLLLLLL!!!!! EVERTON ARE LEVEL! Sigurdsson levels just before the break as he unleashes a thunderbolt from the edge of the area. It hits off the underside of the bar and clips the post before rolling into the back of the net. The midfielder was afforded space and time and he punished the Saints.
43' Tadic turns in the final third and he tries to pick out Ward-Prowse's run at the back post. However, he slightly overhits his cross and the ball goes out for a goal-kick.
41' WIDE! Ward-Prowse's first delivery is deflected behind off Austin's head by Jagielka. The second one is a better cross from the midfielder and Van Dijk rises in the box, only to head his effort wide of the post.
40' Ward-Prowse and Tadic link up down the left and the former tries to send a throughball to Bertrand on the charge, but Jagielka does well to get back to cut out the pass for a corner.
39' Sigurdsson turns in the final third and he looks for options in the box to pick out with a cross, but overhits his delivery out for a goal-kick.
38' A loose piece of control from Van Dijk allows Everton to break with Calvert-Lewin, but his offload to Mirallas in the channel is poor and Hoedt makes the interception.
36' PENALTY SHOUT! Davis wants a penalty for the home side as his low cross is blocked by Keane, but the defender was very close when making the intervention. The referee dismisses the appeal from the Saints.
35' Boufal creates space down the left and he lifts a cross to the back post for Ward-Prowse to attack, but the midfielder just cannot make contact after rising above Kenny.
32' No. He lifts the ball into the box and Forster comes off his line to claim with ease for the home side.
Everton win a corner down the left. Can Sigurdsson unlock the Southampton defence with a quality delivery?
31' Tadic collects on the edge of the box, but Keane does well to stand up to the Serb and force the mistake that leads to a goal-kick.
29' The Saints have lost some of their vigour in attack, but they're still enjoying a lot of possession in the Everton half.
27' Williams replaces Baines for the visitors. Everton will operate with a three-man backline now with Kenny at left-wing back and Lennon in the same role on the right.
26' Cedric raids into an attacking position down the right flank and he whips the ball into the box for Boufal to attack, but he heads wide of the post.
25' Baines is struggling with an injury and may have to make way here.
23' Austin makes a good run towards the near post to attempt to latch on to Cedric's cross, but he cannot make clean contact with Keane for company.
Boufal opens up the Everton defence through the middle and he then sprays the ball out wide to the left for Tadic's run. The Serb tries to connect with his team-mate in the box, but his cutback goes astray.
21' The Saints look a threat every time they build down the right flank. Ward-Prowse fires a low cross into the box from the right flank, but on this occasion the Toffees manage to clear their lines.
18' Bertrand raids down the left flank and slides a fine pass through to Tadic for the opening goal.
GOALLLLLLLLLL!!!! TADIC SCORES!!! Southampton take the lead as they open up Everton down the left. Bertrand latches on to Hojbjerg's pass before offloading to Tadic with a fine pass into the final third. The Serb still has Baines for company, but he manages to get an effort away to get the ball past Pickford and into the net.
17' SAVE! Mirallas breaks into the box and beats the challenge of Hoedt. He only has Forster to beat, but the keeper slides low with his feet and makes the stop.
14' Southampton have enjoyed a strong start to the contest, but their problems in front of goal have continued as Austin has spurned two good opportunities.
12' Cedric takes a knock to the leg and play is stopped so he can receive treatment for his injury.
11' OFF THE POST! Southampton should be ahead as Austin strikes the post. Cedric breaks down the right flank and gets the better of Sigurdsson in a 50/50 challenge. The Portuguese sends a low cross into the near post and Austin latches on to the ball. He fires first time on the half-volley, but his effort clips the outside of the post and goes wide.
10' WIDE! Everton break on the counter and Lennon tees up Mirallas for a strike on the edge of the box. However, he scuffs his effort wide of the post.
9' The Saints have made a good start to the game and put the pressure on down the right as Cedric slides the ball down the right inside channel. Ward-Prowse collects and fires low into the box, but Pickford gathers at his near post.
8' Boufal collects Cedric's cross to the back post and beats the challenge of Gueye, but Kenny is there to hold up enough to allow Gueye to steal possession at the second attempt.
7' CHANCE! Ward-Prowse lifts the ball into the box and Van Dijk wins the initial header to knock the ball down in the penalty area. Austin pounces on the ball, but can only fire his effort over the bar from close range. That was a chance for the Saints.
6' Boufal switches play to the right flank with a fine cross-field pass. Cedric collects and fires low towards the near post, but Baines diverts his cross behind for a corner.
5' Ward-Prowse lifts the ball into the box and although he doesn't make solid contact - the delivery catches out the Everton backline. The ball deflects off Jagielka, but bounces into the hands of Pickford.
4' Davis wins a free-kick for the home side, and the Saints have a chance to lift a free-kick into the box from the right.
2' Forster takes a chance at the back as he collects Bertrand's pass, but the keeper manages to offload before Sigurdsson closes him down.
Unlike last season there's no goal in the first minute. An improvement from the visitors.
1' We're underway at St Mary's Stadium.
The players are out on the pitch, so we should be underway shortly.
FLASHBACK! Southampton won the corresponding fixture 1-0 between the teams last season, with Charlie Austin's strike in the first minute deciding the contest.
STAT ATTACK! Southampton haven’t scored in 10 of their Premier League home games so far in 2017 - only rivals Portsmouth (11 in 2007) have failed to score in more Premier League home matches in a single calendar year (also Fulham 10; in 2002 and Manchester City; 10 in 1995).
STAT ATTACK! Everton have failed to score in eight of their last 12 Premier League visits to face Southampton, including four of the last five.
STAT ATTACK! Southampton have lost just one of their last eight home Premier League meetings with Everton, which came in a 3-0 defeat in August 2015. They've won four and drawn three of the seven contests in their impressive run over the Toffees.
Unsworth has brought his experienced players back into the fold, although there's no place for Wayne Rooney after he started in the 5-1 drubbing by Atalanta. Jordan Pickford, Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines, Idrissa Gueye, Morgan Schneiderlin, Gylfi Sigurdsson. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Aaron Lennon all return to start this afternoon.
Southampton are without Oriol Romeu and Mario Lemina this afternoon in the starting line-up. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg comes into the midfield to replace the suspended Romeu, while Lemina is not fit enough to start. Charlie Austin leads the line, with James Ward-Prowse playing in the hole just behind.
Everton subs: Williams, Ramirez, Rooney, Vlasic, Lookman, Robles, Baningime.
EVERTON (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Kenny; Jagielka, Keane, Baines; Gueye, Schneiderlin; Lennon, Sigurdsson, Mirallas; Calvert-Lewin.
Southampton subs: Yoshida, Long, McCarthy, Lemina, Gabbiadini, Redmond, McQueen.
SOUTHAMPTON (4-2-3-1): Forster; Cedric, Van Dijk, Hoedt, Bertrand; Hojbjerg, Davis; Tadic, Ward-Prowse, Boufal; Austin.
The team news has been announced and we'll start with the home side.
The Toffees were hammered at home on Thursday against Atalanta in the Europa League, continuing their miserable run of form. The club have won just once in their last 11 matches - their 3-2 comeback win over Watford on November 5. If David Unsworth has any hope of securing the manager's position on a full-time basis - a victory this afternoon is a necessity.
Southampton enter today in dire need of a victory following back-to-back defeats in the Premier League. The Saints were beaten 3-0 last time out by Liverpool at Anfield, but also suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Burnley at the start of the month. Mauricio Pellegrino has not enjoyed the best of starts to his reign, but a win this afternoon woud send his team back into the top half of the table.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Southampton and Everton at St Mary's Stadium.
