Participation:

67 teams participate in the competition:
- all 14 Premier League teams;
- all 14 First Division teams;
- all 13 Second Division teams;
- all 12 Third Division teams;
- all 14 Gozo teams.

The 13 First Division teams enter the competition directly at the 2nd Round.
The 14 Second Divsiion teams enter the competition directly at the 2nd Round.
The 14 Premier League teams enter the competition directly at the 3rd Round.


Knockout stage:

Preliminary Round:
26 teams, 16 of them are drawn into 8 pairs with the remaining 10 teams receiving a bye into the 1st Round.
Winner is decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
The match is played at a neutral venue.

1st Round:
18 teams from the Preliminary Round are drawn into 9 pairs.
Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
Matches are played at neutral venues.

2nd Round:
9 teams from the 1st Round and the 27 teams that enter the competition at this stage are drawn into 18 pairs.
Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
Matches are played at neutral venues.

3rd Round:
18 teams from the 2nd Round and the 14 teams that enter the competition at this stage are drawn into 16 pairs.
Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
Matches are played at neutral venues.

4th Round:
16 teams are drawn into 8 pairs.
Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
Matches are played at neutral venues.

Quarter-finals:
8 teams are drawn into 4 pairs.
Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
Matches are played at neutral venues.

Semi-finals:
4 teams are drawn into 2 pairs.
Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
Matches are played at neutral venues.

Final:
The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming FA Trophy winner.
Winner is decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.
The match is played at a neutral venue.

Qualification for UEFA competitions:
winner: UEFA Europa League
* - if the FA Trophy winner qualifies for the UEFA Champions League, then no team from the FA Trophy qualifies. The best placed Premier League team, not otherwise qualified for the UEFA Europa League, earns the spot instead.
