Saints outclassed in Cup defeat

8 December 2012 00:57

Northampton's Heineken Cup hopes suffered a major blow when they were beaten 25-6 at home to Ulster on Friday.

The victory means the Irish side, who have won all 13 of their Pro 12 and Heineken Cup games in 2012-13, are six points clear in Pool Four.

But the Saints will have a chance at revenge next Saturday at Ravenhill in a match they must win to keep alive their hopes.

Saints captain Dylan Hartley was bitterly disappointed with the heavy loss.

"That was not good enough from us. We speak about intensity, they brought bags of it and we didn't bring enough," Hartley said.

"They are unbeaten and they showed why. They are a good team but we made them look better than it could have been."

Tries from Andrew Trimble and Tommy Bowe helped the visitors to a 13-6 half-time lead, with Saints' points coming from two Ryan Lamb penalties.

Further second-half scores from Jared Payne and Dan Tuohy secured a bonus-point victory for Ulster.

In Scotland, Glasgow Warriors slumped to their third straight defeat in Pool 4 as Castres won 9-6 to boost their chances of progressing to the quarter-finals.

Warriors fly-half Scott Wight and Castres scrum-half Rory Kockott each kicked two penalties in the first half but Kockott landed the decisive kick seven minutes into the second half.

Connacht moved to second in Pool 3 behind Harlequins with a 22-14 win over Biarritz in Ireland.

Tongan winger Fetu'u Vainikolo scored an early try for Connacht which fly-half Dan Parks converted. Parks then kicked three penalties and two drop goals.

Dimitri Yachvili's three penalties kept Biarritz in touch before back row forward Imanol Harinordoquy crossed for a late try.
