Boyhood fan Hodkinson returns to injury-hit Manly

15 May 2018 10:19

Manly Sea Eagles have been boosted by the return of half-back Trent Hodkinson from Cronulla Sharks on a contract until the end of 2019.

The injury-hit Sea Eagles are struggling in the NRL this season and were in need of a new playmaker after Jackson Hastings was demoted to reserve grade following a pair of incidents with captain Dale Cherry-Evans.

They now have their man in 29-year-old Hodkinson, who has signed with Manly for a second time having debuted in the NRL with the side in 2010.

"It's good to be back," he told the club's website. "There are a few familiar faces around; not too many, but it's good to be back. I'm excited.

"It's the club I made my debut at - I've always had a soft spot for Manly. It was the team my dad went for, so I went for them growing up as well."

Hodkinson has made 160 NRL appearances - including four for Cronulla this season - and the Sea Eagles are hoping to lean on his wealth of experience.

"Trent's experience and game management will be of enormous value to us," said coach Trent Barrett.

"As a person, Trent is also highly respected for the wonderful amount of work he does in the community, so he will bring plenty to the club on and off the field. This is a great signing for Manly."

Hodkinson has been named among the replacements for Saturday's game against Melbourne Storm, who will be captained by Billy Slater for the first time with Cameron Smith suspended.
