Fish, Monfils to miss Davis Cup clash

Mardy Fish and Gael Monfils have both been ruled out of this week's Davis Cup quarter-final between the United States and France.

The US Tennis Association announced on Monday that Fish would miss the tie, which starts on Friday at the Monte Carlo Country Club, after he was diagnosed with fatigue.

The world number nine woke up in the middle of the night feeling ill following his recent loss to Juan Monaco at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, and was immediately check by a doctor.

"We don't want to get exactly into what the symptoms were. He didn't feel normal. He said, 'Hey, something's wrong here.' He was concerned about it," Fish's agent, John Tobias told The Associated Press.

"His body got out of whack, caused by a number of different variables ... (but) they ruled out any potential long-term issues.

"We're just going to scale him back a little bit and make sure that he arrives at a tournament well-rested and ready to compete.

"His commitment to Davis Cup is like none other. It's absolutely killing him to miss it this time."

World number 66 Ryan Harrison will replace Fish in the US squad.

The loss of Fish will not be felt as acutely, however, after the French Tennis Federation announced world number 14 Monfils would also miss the tie.

An abdominal injury will sideline Monfils and captain Guy Forget is yet to name a replacement for the 25-year-old.

The winner of the US and France will take on the winnr of Spain and Austria in the semi-finals.
