I want to stay at Saracens – McCall not interested in Test job

18 October 2017 00:01

Saracens head coach Mark McCall has ruled out taking a Test job, saying he wants to stay with the European Champions Cup winners beyond 2019.

McCall, 49, has been linked with the Ireland post and also touted as a potential future coach of England and the British and Irish Lions.

Joe Schmidt is expected to depart as Ireland coach after the 2019 Rugby World Cup, Eddie Jones may leave England in the same year and Warren Gatland has announced he will not lead the Lions to South Africa in 2021.

However, McCall has no plans to leave Saracens, insisting he would like to extend his contract with the two-time defending Champions Cup winners.

"My contract runs out in 2019 and I would like to be here for longer than that," the former Ireland international was quoted as saying by the Guardian.

"We have a good thing going on here and sometimes you have to realise when you have a good thing going.

"Genuinely, and some people don't believe me, but having done this for a while and being lucky enough to have been at this club at the right time with the squad that we have and the age profile we have got – I want to stay here."

Despite being linked to the Lions job, McCall said it was not a position he had considered.

"I've never thought about it. I think they've always gone for international coaches and I'm not an international coach," he said. "I think there are better people qualified than me to do that job."
