Johnson speeds to Daytona title

25 February 2013 02:31

Jimmie Johnson has won his second Daytona 500, surging away on the final restart to take the chequered flag ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Johnson, who started Sunday's race ninth on the grid, led for 17 laps - including the final six - to win the most famous NASCAR race for the first time since 2006.

Earnhardt Jr - who won the race in 2004 - again just missed out on victory, finishing runner-up for the second time in three years, while Mark Martin got past reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski late on to claim third spot.

Keselowski - who led the race for 13 laps - finished fourth ahead of Ryan Newman, Greg Biffle and Regan Smith, while Danica Patrick, Michael McDowell and JJ Yeley rounded out the top 10.

Up against Keselowski on the final restart of the 200-lap race, Johnson claimed front position at Daytona International Speedway and then held off Earnhardt Jr - as well as Martin - to claim victory.

Patrick, who had started in pole position, led the race on three occasions but missed out on a podium finish due to a crash on the final lap, which saw her drop to eighth - still the highest ever finish by a female driver at the Daytona 500.
