Perez gunning for F1 glory

12 December 2012 23:47

New McLaren driver Sergio Perez has set himself the target of winning the Formula One drivers' championship in 2013.

Perez will make his debut for McLaren next year after two seasons with Sauber and the 22-year-old Mexican clearly does not lack confidence having set himself the highest of goals for next year.

In his two years with Sauber, Perez failed to win an F1 race, although he did finish on the podium three times this year, including second-place finishes in Malaysia and Italy.

But he remains convinced he can blitz the field in 2013.

"Definitely, because you are going to the best team and the best team normally wins," Perez told The Daily Mail.

"This year, they (McLaren) had many reliability issues and if they solve that they will be ready to fight for the title.

"I think what I am saying is realistic because the team is capable of putting out a very strong car.

"The targets have to be high.

"McLaren wants to win every single race."

Perez has conceded, however, that he will need to start work early to give himself the best chance of claiming the 2013 drivers' championship.

"My target is to win the championship already next year with (McLaren)," Perez said.

"That takes a lot of work during the season, so it's very important to start my preparation really well with them and try to reach their targets."

Perez's aim of claiming his first GP victory and overall title in the same year may seem far-fetched but it is not unprecedented, with Finland's Keke Rosberg having achieved the feat when he was crowned F1 champion in 1982.
