Stanley Cup playoffs: Josi´s late goal gives Predators 2-1 series lead

17 May 2017 06:28

Two wins from the first NHL Stanley Cup Final in Nashville history, the Predators have all the makings of a team of destiny.

Roman Josi's power-play goal with less than four minutes remaining in game three gave the Predators a 2-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks and a 2-1 edge in a Western Conference finals that has quickly shifted in their favour.

Backed again by stellar defensive play and more timely goal scoring, the Predators thoroughly outplayed the Ducks on Tuesday.

Josi, Ryan Ellis and Filip Forsberg combined for 20 shots on goal, matching the total of the entire Ducks roster. They out-attempted Anaheim 75-38 and the possession numbers were equally lopsided.

Anaheim's Corey Perry opened the scoring with 15:35 played in the second period.

Forsberg then tied the game 3:54 into the third on a rebound and Josi caught Ducks goalie John Gibson looking the wrong way on a rebound for the easy game-winner.

Josi's goal was set up by a terrible penalty by the Ducks' Chris Wagner for high-sticking Ellis with 3:55 left. It snapped Nashville's 0-for-11 drought with the man advantage.

The Predators are the first NHL team in 20 years to win 10 consecutive home playoff games.

Three stars

Filip Forsberg, Predators - Forsberg has a goal in all three games in the series, bringing his playoff point total to 11.

John Gibson, Ducks - Gibson made 38 saves and was run over twice. His mental lapse on the final goal put a damper on an otherwise excellent performance that kept the Ducks in game three.

Roman Josi, Predators -  Josi is tied with fellow defenseman Ryan Ellis with 10 points in these playoffs, second in the NHL behind Erik Karlsson.

Highlight

Wednesday's game to watch

Eastern Conference finals: Penguins at Senators - Ottawa have effectively deployed their methodical trap system in all but one period so far in the series, however Phil Kessel exploited that lapse and it is now a best-of-five affair. The Sens will continue to do what has worked; it is up to the Penguins to capitalise on the few opportunities they will be afforded.
