Canadiens trump Maple Leafs, Ducks smash Predators

28 February 2013 06:54

The Montreal Canadiens scored three third-period goals to overcome bitter rivals the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 in the NHL.

Max Pacioretty scored twice for Montreal, including one in the third period, as the Canadiens knocked off the Maple Leafs in Toronto.

Wednesday's win saw the Canadiens open up a three-point margin at the top of the Northeast Division, while the result was extra sweet for Montreal as it also avenged a 6-0 home loss by Toronto on February 9.

The Maple Leafs produced the opening goal of the game in the 14th minute of the first period when Frazer McLaren scored against the run of play but Montreal equalised just three minutes later through Alexei Emelin.

A power-play goal from Pacioretty gave the Canadiens a 2-1 lead early in the second period but the game was again level at the break thanks to Clarke MacArthur's goal.

Montreal took control in the third period with Brendan Gallagher, Pacioretty and Brian Gionta scoring in a nine-minute interval to wrap up the victory.

The win was the Canadiens' seventh in nine games and takes them to 29 points, the best tally in the NHL's Eastern Conference.

In California, the Pacific-leading Anaheim Ducks blitzed the Nashville Predators 5-1 with three first-period goals setting up the win for the home team.

Kyle Palmieri scored a hat-trick for Anaheim, including two goals in the opening period, while Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf produced three assists each for the Ducks.

In other NHL results, the Los Angeles Kings scored twice in the third period to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1, while the Philadelphia Flyers clobbered the Washington Capitals 4-1.
