Bruins stroll past Islanders, Kopecky treble sinks Penguins

27 February 2013 07:54

The Boston Bruins won their fourth consecutive NHL game with a 4-1 thumping of the New York Islanders on Tuesday.

Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask made 36 saves as his team completed their five-game road trip with four wins and a loss to move within one point of Northeast Division leaders the Montreal Canadiens.

Adam McQuaid put Boston in front in the first period before Casey Cizikas equalised for the Islanders.

But the Bruins scored the next three goals of the game through Brad Marchand, David Krejci and Gregory Campbell, while Finnish goaltender Rask produced a season-best performance for Boston to wrap up the victory.

In a shock result, the Florida Panthers, who sit fifth in the Southeast Division, defeated Atlantic Division leaders the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-4.

Florida's Tomas Kopecky notched the first hat-trick of his career, including the last goal of the game, as the Panthers handed Pittsburgh just their second loss in seven matches.

Loui Eriksson scored the decisive goal in the Dallas Stars' 5-4 overtime win over the Columbia Blue Jackets.

Dallas hit the front on four occasions throughout the three regulation periods only for the Blue Jackets to peg them back but Eriksson's goal with less than two minutes remaining in overtime wrapped up the Stars' win.

In San Jose, the Sharks needed a shootout to defeat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2, while the Winnipeg Jets knocked off the New York Rangers 4-3.

In other NHL results, the Buffalo Sabres triumphed 2-1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Phoenix Coyotes defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-2 and Braden Holtby made 33 saves as the Washington Capitals won 3-0 against the Carolina Hurricanes.
