Blackhawks stretch streak to 18, Ducks edge Colorado

25 February 2013 05:15

Chicago's record unbeaten start to the NHL season has extended to 18 matches after edging past the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday.

An Andrew Shaw goal late in the second period was enough to decide the contest as the Blackhawks won 1-0.

Goaltender Corey Crawford was influential with 28 saves for his second shutout of the season to help Chicago win their fifth game in a row in regulation time and consolidate top spot in the Western Conference.

In Anaheim, the Ducks won their fifth match in a row after recording a 4-3 overtime victory against Colorado.

Corey Perry scored two goals for the hosts, his second one coming with just 46 seconds left in the additional period to settle the result and avoid a shootout as Anaheim maintained their number two ranking in the West.

The Avalanche got off to a flying start with goals from Cody McLeod and PA Parentau handing them a 2-0 advantage at the first interval.

Perry and Teemu Selanne ensured scores were locked at 2-2 within the first 10 minutes of the second stanza but an on-target wrist shot from Colorado centre John Mitchell gave back the visitors the lead (3-2) at the second change.

Ryan Getzlaf found the net for the Ducks midway through the third period to level things up at 3-3 and with no further goals scored in regulation time, the contest was sent into overtime.

The Boston Bruins kept in touch with Northeast Division leaders Montreal after they easily accounted for the Panthers 4-1 in Florida.

Milan Lucic and Zdeno Chara put the visitors up 2-0 within the first 14 minutes and while Tomas Kopecky pulled one back for the Panthers before the first change, further goals to Chris Kelly and Daniel Paille in the second and third periods respectively completed the comprehensive win.

The result leaves Boston just two points adrift of the Canadiens, who also lead the Eastern Conference.

In other results, the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated Tampa Bay Lightning 5-3, Detroit Red Wings smashed Vancouver Canucks 8-3, Winnipeg Jets downed New Jersey Devils 4-2, Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders 4-2 and the Calgary Flames edged the Phoenix Coyotes 5-4.
