The Montreal Canadiens have claimed their fourth successive win in the NHL with a 3-0 triumph over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Canadiens goaltender Peter Budaj claimed his first shutout since the 30-year-old Slovak joined Montreal from the Colorado Avalanche in July 2011, making 19 saves against the Hurricanes.

Montreal dominated their home game on Monday but did not take the lead until the third minute of the final period when Brandon Prust scored after Alex Galchenyuk and Lars Eller's good lead-up work.

Max Pacioretty and Alexei Emelin then set-up Tomas Plekanec for the Canadiens' second goal in the 13th minute and just 18 seconds later, Pacioretty also scored after assists from David Desharnais and Raphael Diaz.

The win takes Montreal top of the Northeast Division with 21 points, one ahead of Boston, while Carolina remain in front of the Southeast despite their first defeat in four games.

In Colorado, the Avalanche held off a late surge from the Nashville Predators to win 6-5 with Matt Duchene leading the way for the victors.

Avalanche captain Duchene scored a disputed goal and helped set up two others, including the crucial sixth before Nashville struck the final two goals of the match to ensure a nervous finish for Colorado.

The home side scored the opening two goals of the game and led 3-1 in the fourth minute of the second period when Duchene, who appeared to be offside, slotted the puck home.

The two teams traded goals in the second period until Duchene set up Jamie McGinn to send Colorado 6-3 ahead and while the Predators drew within a goal when Shea Weber scored in the second-last minute of the match, the Avalanche held on for victory.

Elsewhere, Claude Giroux scored twice and grabbed an assist in the Philadelphia Flyers' 7-0 thrashing of the New York Islanders, while in Phoenix, the Coyotes thumped the Calgary Flames 4-0.

In other NHL results, the Toronto Maple Leafs won 3-0 over the Florida Panthers, the Anaheim Ducks overcame the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 and the Ottawa Senators defeated the New Jersey Devils 2-1 in a shootout.
