15 February 2013 05:33

The New York Islanders came back from 2-0 down to secure a 4-3 shootout win over city rivals the New York Rangers on Thursday.

Goals from Dan Girardi and Marian Gaborik had the Rangers in the ascendancy early at Madison Square Garden, but Colin McDonald, John Tavares and Brad Boyes put the Islanders ahead seven minutes and 25 seconds into the second period.

Carl Hagelin scored a power play goal for the Rangers to tie things up with a period to play, but with neither side able to break the deadlock the match headed for overtime and a shootout.

Gaborik and Rick Nash missed for the Rangers, while Frans Nielsen and Tavares both scored to give the Islanders a narrow win and bragging rights in the Big Apple.

Elsewhere on Thursday, the Washington Capitals climbed off the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings thanks to a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Eric Fehr scored twice for the Capitals, with both assists coming from centre Mathieu Perreault, who had three in total for the game.

Nashville moved to third place in the west courtesy of their 3-0 win over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Gabriel Bourque, Nick Spaling and Mike Fisher all scored in the third period for the Predators, with goaltender Pekka Rinne stopping 19 shots for his second successive shutout.

The Carolina Hurricanes were too strong for the Toronto Maple Leafs at PNC Arena, winning 3-1, while a third-period goal from Rene Bourque lifted the Montreal Canadiens to a 1-0 triumph over the Florida Panthers.

And the Western Conference's bottom side the Colorado Avalanche pulled off a surprise, with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Minnesota Wild.
