Steen fires Blues past Red Wings

14 February 2013 07:08

Alex Steen scored the winner in overtime as the St Louis Blues snapped a five-game losing streak against Detroit in the NHL on Wednesday.

With scores level at the end of full-time, Steen stepped up to knock in the puck just 52 seconds into the extra period to help the Blues to a 4-3 victory.

Chris Stewart added a goal and an assist at Joe Louis Arena, while Patrik Berglund and Vladimir Tarasenko also scored for the Blues.

For the Red Wings, Pavel Datsyuk, Drew Miller and Tomas Tatar all found the net but were unable to help their team record a fourth consecutive win.

Meanwhile, the Ottawa Senators suffered a double blow with a 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins and a serious injury to star defenseman Erik Karlsson.

Karlsson suffered an Achilles injury in a heavy collision with Penguins forward Matt Cooke, ruling him out indefinitely - possibly for the rest of the season.

James Neal scored twice, while Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists for the Penguins, who defeated the Senators for the second time this season.

Pascal Dupuis also got on the scoresheet for Pittsburgh, who remain fourth in the Eastern Conference.

Stephane Da Costa and Jim O'Brien scored for the Senators.

Wednesday's other match saw the Calgary Flames sink the Dallas Stars 7-4 thanks to Michael Cammalleri's hat-trick.
