The New Jersey Devils won for the seventh time in the NHL on Saturday, while the Detroit Red Wings also triumphed.

At the Prudential Center in New Jersey, the Devils scored twice in the final period as they beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 to move to the top of the Eastern Conference.

Brandon Sutter gave the Penguins the lead just 83 seconds into the contest when he deflected an effort past Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur and the score remained 1-0 to the visitors until late in the second stanza.

Rookie Stefan Matteau scored for the first time in the NHL late in the period to level proceedings and it did not take long for the Devils to assert their authority in the third.

A string of penalties allowed the Devils to dominate possession and they made their numerical advantage count during back-to-back power plays as Adam Henrique and Bobby Butler scored to seal the win.

Meanwhile at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, the Red Wings left it late to seal a narrow 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

After a scoreless opening period, Pavel Datsyuk gave the Red Wings the lead eight minutes into the second stanza, but Justin Schultz levelled the scores when he found the back of the net nine minutes later.

But Niklas Kronwall stepped up six minutes into the final term with his first goal of the season to seal the triumph.

In other matches on Saturday, the Anaheim Ducks snuck past the St Louis Blues 6-5, the Washington Capitals crushed the Florida Panthers 5-0 and the Minnesota Wild edged the Nashville Predators 2-1.

The Buffalo Sabres downed the New York Islanders 3-2, the Toronto Maple Leafs shutout the Montreal Canadiens 6-0 and the Phoenix Coyotes outgunned the San Jose Sharks 1-0, while the Winnipeg Jets won by the same score against the Ottawa Senators.

The Philadelphia Flyers overpowered the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3, the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Calgary Flames 5-1 and the match in Boston between the Bruins and the Lightning was postponed because of the bad weather lashing America in the past few days.
