Anaheim hand San Jose first loss

5 February 2013 06:59

The San Jose Sharks have suffered their first regulation loss of the season after falling 2-1 to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday.

The Sharks headed into the clash with just one loss – in overtime – from their first eight matches and looked headed for another victory when Logan Couture put the visitors ahead in the closing stages of the first period.

But the Ducks had other ideas and equalised early in the final period through Saku Koivu and completed the comeback victory when Sheldon Souray netted with less than seven minutes remaining.

The loss leaves the Sharks one game behind Chicago at the top of the Western Conference, while the Ducks move up to fifth place.

Christopher Tanev was the hero for Vancouver with his goal – the first of his career – coming with just 19.3 seconds left in overtime to help the Canucks to a thrilling 3-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

Kevin Biesksa had tied the game with just over two minutes remaining in the third period after the Oilers jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the back of goals from Ales Hemsky and Ryan Smyth.

Former Conn Smythe Trophy winner Cam Ward stopped 41 of 42 shots to help the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Jordan Staal, Eric Staal, Justin Faulk and Patrick Dwyer all scored for Carolina, while Jeff Skinner chipped in with three assists after Matt Frattin had opened the scoring for the hosts in the first period.

Jamie Benn scored his first goals of the season with his brace helping the Dallas Stars to a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.

The Avalanche had fought back from a two-goal deficit to keep alive their hopes of preserving their undefeated record at home, but Benn hit the winner in the 16th minute of the second period.

The Phoenix Coyotes continued their recent resurgence after a poor start to the season with a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild.

Lauri Korpikoski and Martin Hanzal were both on target for the hosts, while Mike Smith made 21 saves in a sharp performance between the posts.
