2 February 2013 07:11

The Dallas Stars survived two scares before eventually prevailing 4-3 in a shootout against the Phoenix Coyotes in NHL action on Friday.

Dallas led 2-0 and 3-2 before Martin Hanzal scored to tie the game twice for the Coyotes.

The Stars had a golden opportunity to go ahead with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, though a Jaromir Jagr pass bounced over Loui Eriksson's stick in front of an open net.

Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith denied Loui Eriksson and Ray Whitney in the shootout before allowing goals to Jamie Benn and Jagr, who secured the win for Dallas.

Meanwhile, third-period goals from Troy Brouwer and Wojtek Wolski guided the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Dan Ellis posted his 13th career shutout and first with Carolina as the Panthers accounted for the Ottawa Senators 1-0.

Detroit captain Henrik Zetterberg starred with a hat-trick and two assists as the Red Wings won 5-3 against the St Louis Blues.

Tampa Bay rookie Cory Conacher posted two goals and two assists as the Lightning routed the Winnipeg Jets 8-3.

Kyle Palmieri scored two goals and Viktor Fasth made 26 saves as the Anaheim Ducks earned a 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild.

Jordan Schroeder scored the only goal of the shootout as the Vancouver Canucks overcame the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1.
