The Buffalo Sabres scored seven times to beat the Boston Bruins in NHL action on Thursday, while the Pittsburgh Penguins also won.

Thomas Vanek was the hero for the Sabres, scoring a hat-trick and giving off two assists in the 7-4 rout at the TD Garden in Boston.

After a scoreless first period, the game came to life early in the second when Vanek got his first of the night to give the Sabres the lead.

A flurry of goals followed as Rich Peverley and Brad Marchand twice found the back of the net as the Bruins leapt out to what appeared to be a match-winning 3-1 advantage with a little under 10 minutes remaining in the second period.

But Vanek got his second and then set up Tyler Ennis for the equaliser as the two teams headed into the final period with the scores tied.

David Krejci scored first in the last term, but goals to Alexander Sulzer, Cody Hodgson, Vanek and Jason Pominville ensured the Sabres went on to record their third victory of the season.

Meanwhile at Madison Square Garden, veteran keeper Tomas Vokoun registered his 49th shutout in the NHL as the Pittsburgh Penguins overpowered the New York Rangers 3-0.

Vokoun stopped 28 shots in another impressive individual performance as the Penguins won for a second time at Madison Square Garden in 2013 and for the fourth time this season.

Evgeni Malkin, James Neal and Simon Despres were the goal scorers for the Penguins, but the real star was Vokoun at the other end of the ice.

The loss was the Rangers' fourth of the season and sees them slip outside the playoff spots.

In other matches on Thursday, the Toronto Maple Leafs rallied late to beat the Washington Capitals 3-2, the New York Islanders edged past the New Jersey Devils 5-4 in overtime, the St Louis Blues outgunned the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 and the Florida Panthers overpowered the Winnipeg Jets 6-3

Elsewhere, the Colorado Avalanche downed the Calgary Flames 6-3, the San Jose Sharks overran the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 in a shootout and the Nashville Predators defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 after a shootout.
