The Sharks opened the scoring through Logan Couture in the first period before Steve Sullivan's second-period goal levelled proceedings for the visitors.

Third-period goals from Antoine Vermette and Lauri Korpikoski put the Coyotes in front until San Jose stormed home to claim their third consecutive win.

Patrick Marleau had two goals and an assist in the comeback, while Martin Havlat and Joe Thornton, with three seconds to go, also found the net for the Sharks.

Meanwhile, the New York Islanders rallied from two goals down to clinch a 7-4 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"For me it's about playing the way we have to play, and we didn't do that in the first period," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said.

"We turned pucks over and we didn't have any discipline in our decision making. We talked to this group early on and said that they have to take some ownership in this room as players.

"Most of them have been here for a couple of years, and the second and third periods exemplified the way we need to play."

Elsewhere, the Montreal Canadiens scored four second-period goals to secure a 4-1 win over the winless Washington Capitals, who slumped to their third straight loss.

"Things haven't been going our way," Capitals coach Adam Oates said.

"The team's probably a little fragile, and we gave them a five-on-three goal, which took the wind out of our sails a little bit."

In other games, Sam Gagner scored a powerplay goal just over three minutes into overtime to hand the Edmonton Oilers a 2-1 victory over the winless Los Angeles Kings.

Three goals from Eric Staal and two from Jeff Skinner guided the Carolina Hurricanes to a 6-3 win against the Buffalo Sabres.

Craig Anderson made 25 saves as the Ottawa Senators continued their perfect start to the season with a 3-1 victory over the Florida Panthers.

Patrik Berglund starred with a goal and an assist as the St Louis Blues posted a 3-0 win against the Nashville Predators.

The Philadelphia Flyers held on for their first win of the season after beating the New York Rangers 2-1.

The Chicago Blackhawks fought back from two goals down to defeat the Dallas Stars 3-2 in overtime.

Finally, Matt Duchene scored two goals and Semyon Varlamov made 33 saves as the Colorado Avalanche shutout the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-0.
