Marian Gaborik scored a hat-trick as the New York Rangers won for the first time this NHL season, while the Maple Leafs and Canucks also won.

At Madison Square Garden in New York on Wednesday, Gaborik found the back of the net twice in the opening period and then hit the winning goal in overtime as the Rangers snuck past the Boston Bruins 4-3.

Gaborik put the Rangers up by two goals with consecutive strikes in the first period, but Brad Marchand and Milan Lucic scored during the second term as the previously unbeaten Bruins levelled proceedings.

Taylor Pyatt restored the Rangers' lead 46 seconds after Lucic's goal, but Nathan Horton's late effort with a little over four minutes remaining in regulation ensured the match went into an extra period.

And it was Gaborik who got the winner early in overtime as he struck past Boston goalie Tuukka Rask at the second attempt to register his 14th hat-trick in the NHL and lead the Rangers to their first victory of the season.

Meanwhile, at the CONSOL Energy Center, James van Riemsdyk scored twice as the Toronto Maple Leafs upset the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2.

Van Riemsdyk hit his first goals of the season and provided an assist for Mikhail Grabovski in the third period as the Maple Leafs won for the second time this campaign.

Evgeni Malkin put the Penguins ahead with a goal late in the first term, but Clarke MacArthur's effort and van Riemsdyk's brace helped cancel out Sidney Crosby's fine solo effort as the Maple Leafs headed into the final period ahead 3-2.

Goals from Grabovski and Tyler Bozak in the third sealed the result for the Maple Leafs, as the Penguins slumped to their first loss of the season.

In other matches on Wednesday, the Vancouver Canucks beat the Calgary Flames 3-2 in a shootout after scores were tied at the end of regulation and overtime, while the Phoenix Coyotes crushed the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-1.
