NHL stars Berlin bound

10 October 2012 06:49

NHL stars Claude Giroux and Daniel Briere are moving to Europe while the NHL lockout drags on in the United States.

The Philadelphia Flyers centres are both heading to German side Berlin Eisbaren for the duration of the dispute in the world's most popular ice hockey competition.

Giroux, third in NHL scoring last season with 93 points, also had interest from teams in Russia, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.

With the dispute between NHL players and owners over wages showing no sign of ending, it could be a lengthy spell in Germany.

Giroux said he was relieved to have the chance to play.

"I just want to play hockey and I looked at most options that I could and when my agent talked to me about playing with the Bears in Berlin I did some research and I talked to Danny (Briere) and he did some research, too," Giroux said.

"We looked at the fans, how intense they are and how they like the game and we know a couple of guys from the team, too, so it was an easy decision to come here."

Both Giroux and Briere could make their debut for Berlin on Friday when they face Kolner Haie.

"We have only heard good things about Berlin so we decided to come together and it is a great experience," Giroux said.

"We are looking forward to getting back on the ice and I think Friday is going to be a pretty exciting game."
