11 May 2019 02:56

The Czech Republic stunned reigning IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship holders Sweden, while Slovakia defeated the United States on the opening day.

Eyeing a third consecutive title, Sweden suffered a 5-2 defeat against the Czechs in Group B in Bratislava on Friday.

The defeat snapped Sweden's 17-game winning streak, dating back to May 2017.

"They play great system hockey, but I think we played better," said Czech forward Filip Chytil. "We scored more goals, so we're happy for that."

Elsewhere in Group B, Russia claimed a 5-2 victory over Norway.
