Senators fire head coach Boucher

1 March 2019 17:31

The struggling Ottawa Senators have fired head coach Guy Boucher.

Marc Crawford, a member of the Senators' staff for the past three seasons, will assume interim coaching duties after Crawford was relieved of his duties on Friday.

Boucher has 15 years of experience as an NHL head coach and led the Colorado Avalanche to the 1996 Stanley Cup.

The 58-year-old enjoyed a successful first season in Ottawa, guiding the Senators to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they lost in seven games to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

But the Senators have struggled in the past two seasons, finishing 28-43-11 in the 2017-18 campaign and currently holding the worse NHL record of 22-37-5.

Boucher finishes at Ottawa with a 94-108-26 mark.

"I want to thank Guy for his three years of service. He is a good person and has been an excellent representative of the Senators. At this point, however, we need a different set of coaching and leadership skills to guide our team through this rebuild," general manager Pierre Dorion said in a statement.

"In the interim, Marc will bring a different perspective along with a wealth of head coaching experience."
