7 May 2018 23:20

Russia continued their early domination of Group A at the IIHF World Championships with a comprehensive 6-0 thrashing of Belarus on Monday.

The Olympic champions, who finished third last year, have made a stunning start to this year's competition, scoring 20 goals and yet to concede.

Six different scorers backed up their 7-0 successes over France and Austria in the opening two matches, Russia looking strong favourites for a 28th crown.

Sweden maintained their 100 per cent start to the defence of their title with a 4-0 triumph over France, keeping them on par with Russia on nine points.

Rickard Rakell and Mikael Backlund put them on their way in the first period, before Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Elias Pettersson put the game out of sight.

Canada, beaten finalists 12 months ago, picked up their second win of Group B as they beat hosts Denmark 7-1, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins with a brace.

It is the United States who lead the pool after three matches thanks to a 3-0 victory over Germany.

After a tight opening period, USA turned on the style with Patrick Kane, Derek Ryan and Alex Debrincat sealing their win.
