17 September 2018 19:54

Enzo Calzaghe, father and trainer of former super middleweight world champion Joe, has died at the age of 69.

Under his father's guidance, Joe Calzaghe held the WBO title for over a decade during a professional career that spanned 15 years, finishing with a perfect 46-0 record.

Joe Calzaghe claimed the super middleweight strap with a defeat of Chris Eubank in October 1997, while he also scored memorable victories over Jeff Lacy and Mikkel Kessler in the division before moving up to light heavyweight to beat Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr in his final two outings.

As well as his son, Enzo Calzaghe trained Gavin Rees and Enzo Maccarinelli to world titles, and his family confirmed the news of his passing in a brief statement.

"The family are devastated to have to announce the death of our beloved Enzo," the Calzaghes said.

"Joe and all of the Calzaghe family would like to thank the public for their well wishes and kind thoughts, especially the outpouring of support from within the boxing community.

"Enzo led an incredible life both inside and outside of the boxing gym and his loss is a devastating one for the entire Calzaghe family.

"We please ask that people respect our privacy at this difficult time."
