England thump NZ to take T20 series

15 February 2013 10:21

Alex Hales made an unbeaten 80 as England thumped New Zealand by 10 wickets in the series-deciding third Twenty20 in Wellington on Friday.

Hales' knock included four sixes and nine fours off 42 balls as England ran out comfortable winners with 44 balls to spare.

New Zealand, sent in to bat by England captain Stuart Broad, posted a lowly 8-139 on a pitch that should have suited the batsmen at Westpac Stadium.

Broad starred with 3-15 off four overs, while fellow paceman Jade Dernbach added 3-36 and spinners James Tredwell and Joe Root took a wicket apiece.

Martin Guptill led New Zealand with 59 off 55, though his efforts were vain as no other Black Cap made more than 26.

England openers Hales and Michael Lumb showed no remorse in reply, racing to 50 off 28 balls and 100 by the 11th over.

Lumb smashed five sixes and one four in his unbeaten 53 off 34 balls, while New Zealand seamer Ian Butler was dispatched for an alarming 0-41 from 2.4 overs.

England, who won the opening T20 in Auckland by 40 runs, were humbled by 55 runs in the second game in Hamilton.

The teams will meet in a three-match ODI series starting in Hamilton on Sunday, followed by a three-Test series in March.
