England pick Woakes for NZ tour

24 January 2013 13:59

Warwickshire's Chris Woakes is just a step away from his Test debut having been selected in England's squad for the tour of New Zealand.

The inclusion of the 23-year-old all-rounder at the expense of the injured Tim Bresnan is the only change to England's Test squad following the 2-1 series win in India late last year.

Woakes, who averages 38.25 with the bat and 25.56 with the ball at first-class level, will make his Test debut if picked in any of England's three matches against New Zealand, starting in Dunedin on March 6.

Bresnan is set to return to England after the one-day international (ODI) series in India is complete to investigate his injured right elbow.

England selector Geoff Miller believes Woakes has earned his chance in the Test squad.

"With Tim Bresnan currently unavailable while his elbow is assessed there is a good opportunity for Chris Woakes to gain further experience in the international environment," Miller said on Thursday.

"We have a busy international summer ahead of us and the medical team felt this was an ideal opportunity for Bresnan to take some time out to ensure his elbow is functioning effectively.

"Woakes has impressed on the England Performance Programme and with England Lions and Warwickshire in recent years as well as with England in the limited-overs formats."

Woakes has also been included in England's ODI and Twenty20 (T20) squads for the tour of New Zealand with shorter-format series to take place in February before the Tests, with Joe Root and James Harris also coming in to the former.

Craig Kieswetter has been dropped from both shorter-format squads due to a lack of consistency.

"Craig Kieswetter has had an extended opportunity in ODI and T20 cricket," Miller said.

"He has shown evidence of delivering performances on the international stage however we don't feel these have been delivered consistently enough.

"The door is not closed to Craig, and he can fight his way back into contention for international selection through consistent high performances with Somerset."
