Vinay Kumar to replace Balaji for T20s

13 December 2012 10:03

Lakshmipathy Balaji has been ruled out of the Twenty 20 series against England due to injury, with R Vinay Kumar chosen as his replacement.

Balaji is suffering from a stress injury to his right big toe and will not be fit for the two-match series, with India's national selection committee picking Karnataka paceman Vinay Kumar in his place.

The injury will come as a big blow to the Chennai pacer, who is on a comeback trail after being sidelined for several years due to multiple injuries.

He made his comeback into India's T20 side on the back of some good performances for Kolkata Knight Riders in the most recent Indian Premier League.

Although expensive, Balaji was India's highest wicket-taker during the ICC World T20 in Sri Lanka, claiming nine wickets in four matches at 7.33.

Having made a comeback into the Indian side through the shortest version of the game, Balaji had set his eyes on also becoming part of the ODI team to play against Pakistan and England but might not recover in time to make the cut.

Vinay Kumar, however, will aim grab this opportunity with both hands, having fallen out of favour with the selectors since the start of 2012.

He made his Test debut against Australia in January but failed to keep his spot and played his last matches in both T20 and ODIs for India in March.
