Adelaide fightback sees off Taipans

16 February 2013 13:12

The Adelaide 36ers staged a remarkable comeback to record a 71-68 win over the Cairns Taipans in the NBL on Saturday.

Trailing by 13 at the last change at the Cairns Convention Centre, the 36ers looked out of the encounter.

But despite missing their chances early in the last quarter, Adelaide rallied and a 6-0 run to start the term saw them to within touching distance.

When Stephen Weigh made a two-pointer with two minutes and 51 seconds remaining, the scores were level at 62-62.

It remained tight through until the end before a pair of Adam Gibson (16 points) free throws had the 36ers two points up.

Brad Hill responded for the hosts, only for Jason Cadee to sink a crucial three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining.

It was left to Hill to respond but his shot to send the clash into overtime missed, giving the 36ers a come-from-behind victory.

Anthony Petrie led the way for the victors with 18 points, while Daniel Johnson (17) and Gibson were the only others to manage double figures.

For the Taipans, Cameron Tragardh (14 points), Jamar Wilson and Shane Edwards (12 each) and Aaron Grabau (11) all contributed.

A 20-8 second quarter had helped the Taipans to a 47-29 half-time lead but the 36ers slowly fought their way back before storming home.
