15 February 2013 13:46

The New Zealand Breakers earned their 12th straight NBL win after beating the Wollongong Hawks 92-84 at North Shore Events Centre on Friday.

Mika Vukona starred with 24 points as the Breakers improved their record on top of the NBL ladder to 20-3.

Tom Abercrombie added 17 points and six rebounds for New Zealand, while Alex Pledger had 12 points, 10 boards and three blocks.

Adris Deleon led Wollongong with 33 points, while Oscar Forman scored 21.

The Breakers jumped out of the blocks with a 26-14 opening quarter and never looked back.

The Hawks outscored New Zealand in the second and fourth quarters, and managed to reduce the margin to as little as three points at one stage, but couldn't do enough to avoid their third straight loss.

Wollongong are in fifth place with a 9-13 record ahead of a crucial home game against the Townsville Crocodiles on Sunday.

The Breakers have almost two weeks off before their next clash against the Adelaide 36ers at Vector Arena.

In other results, the Cairns Taipans twice rallied from 12 points down to beat the struggling Sydney Kings 78-75 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Friday.

The Taipans took the lead for the first time with just under four minutes to go as Sydney slumped to their seventh straight loss.

Alex Loughton led Cairns with 17 points, while American import Jamar Wilson added 16 and Cameron Tragardh scored 13.

Ian Crosswhite starred for the Kings with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, while Tom Garlepp had a season-best 11 points and six boards.

Sydney led by 12 points in both the second and third quarters but failed to prevent the Taipans from causing an upset.

The Kings remain fourth on the ladder with a 10-13 record, while seventh-placed Cairns kept their slim finals hopes alive at 7-13.

The Taipans host the Adelaide 36ers on Saturday, while Sydney must wait until February 24 before their next match against the Perth Wildcats.

In the late tip-off, the Wildcats claimed their 10th consecutive home win after thumping the Crocodiles 80-52 at Perth Arena.
