8 February 2013 15:38

The Boston Celtics downed the Los Angeles Lakers in NBA action on Thursday, while the Denver Nuggets also won.

It was a one-sided contest at the TD Garden in Boston, as the Celtics cruised past the Lakers 116-95 to make it six wins on the trot.

With Dwight Howard returning to their line-up after a stint on the sidelines through injury, the Lakers made a promising start but still trailed by four (27-23) at quarter-time.

Veteran Paul Pierce scored with ease during the second stanza as the Celtics opened up a double-digit advantage (58-44) at half-time and a 37-25 third term was enough to give the Lakers no chance heading in the final quarter.

The Lakers did outscore their opponents 26-21 during that final quarter, but the damage was already done as the Celtics held on for a much-deserved victory.

Pierce led the way for the Celtics with 24 points, while Jeff Green contributed strongly off the bench with 19.

Veteran Kevin Garnett chipped in with 15 for the Celtics and also notched his 25,000 point in the NBA during the contest.

Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 27 points, while Jodie Meeks was next best with 13.

The Celtics improve to 26-23 for the season, while the Lakers (23-27) need to hit back quickly if they are to reach the playoffs this season.

Meanwhile at the Pepsi Center in Denver, the Nuggets made it eight straight triumphs with a crushing 128-96 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

The Bulls only trailed by five at half-time, but the Nuggets outscored their opponents 37-16 during a dominant third term to take control of the encounter.

Six players scored in double figures for the Nuggets, with the best of those Wilson Chandler with 24 off the bench.

Chandler nailed five three-pointers in his impressive haul as the Nuggets shot an outstanding 58 percent from the field during the match.

Kenneth Faried (21 points) was the next highest scorer for the Nuggets, while Daequan Cook led the Bulls with 19.

The Nuggets improve to 32-18 for the season, while the Bulls have a 29-20 record.
