Rivers rues narrow loss

25 January 2013 15:02

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers was left frustrated after his hard-working side went down to the New Yorks Knicks 89-86 in the NBA on Thursday.

The Celtics shot just 40.8 percent for the night with Rivers forced to use a timeout midway through the fourth quarter simply as a delaying tactic when the Knicks went up 80-70.

While he was disappointed by the necessity of halting the Knicks' momentum, Rivers refused to fault his players workrate in the defeat.

"I actually thought we had the look (of challenging)," he said.

"I think Paul (Pierce) tried to catch it with one hand to be honest but they made a good play and somebody poked it out of his hands. Being down, we needed a three with no timeouts but overall we lost the game and I thought neither team played great but if I saw that effort every night, I'd be very happy.

"Having to waste your time out, which I hate doing, in the middle of the fourth because we lost our spirit but that's the only time when they got up 10 I think, that shouldn't have been a time out situation. I just had to use it. I would have loved to have had that back.

"It's frustrating to lose when you give effort because you've got to keep convincing your guys that if you play that way every night, then you're going to make more shots than that and you're going to win a lot of games but right now they're sat there thinking they lost so, they know it. They know that if they put that effort in, then they're going to win most nights."
