Hornets to be renamed Pelicans

25 January 2013 00:32

New Orleans NBA franchise owner Tom Benson has officially announced the Hornets will be known as the Pelicans next season.

Although the name change to the Pelicans has been in the pipeline for some time, the team officially revealed their new colours and logo at a press conference on Thursday.

According to the club, the Pelicans name was a step forward as it is the state bird of Louisiana and is intended to represent the area's recovery from the devastation of recent hurricanes, most notably 2005's Hurricane Katrina.

"It was a priority to change the name to reflect our culture, our community and our resolve. The pelican does that," Benson said in a statement.

"Our region has been hard hit in recent years, and the one thing that stands out is the resiliency and determination to come back, to fight and overcome. The pelican symbolises that.

"The synergy of this name, this bird and the future of our state and region are intertwined and in three, five, 10 years from now, it will be not only be a name of a sports franchise but it will also be the face of the continued recovery of our region.

"We will promote healthy habitats, not only for our youth but for our community, our coast and our wildlife. The pelican name will do that. It is more than a name. It represents our way of life."

The team's colours will officially be blue, gold and red but the primary colour will be blue.
