Hot-shot Corletto leads Breakers to NBL win

24 January 2013 09:51

The New Zealand Breakers extended their lead at the top of the NBL ladder with a 95-76 victory over the Sydney Kings on Thursday.

It was yet another dominant home performance from the Breakers, as they led for the majority of the contest to eventually cruise to their 16th triumph of the season.

Veteran guard Daryl Corletto led the way for the Breakers with six three-pointers in his 22-point haul, while swingman Thomas Abercrombie chipped in with a handy 17.

Ben Madgen top-scored for the Kings with 23 points, while Ian Crosswhite (22) was next best.

Crosswhite scored to put the Kings up 4-3 early, but a trio of triples from Corletto helped the Breakers claim the ascendancy as the home side took a nine-point (29-20) lead into quarter-time.

While the Breakers did the damage from outside in the opening term, it was a different story in the second stanza as Mika Vukona (10 points) and Will Hudson (seven) began to do what they liked inside the key.

The duo scored at will as the Breakers increased their advantage into double figures and only a late three-pointer from Corin Henry (11 points) kept the Kings within 20 at the main break.

Madgen found his range during the third term as the Kings closed within striking distance, but CJ Bruton (12 points) and Corey Webster (six) hit some late buckets as the Breakers took an 11-point (77-66) lead into the final break.

Graeme Dann (four points) and Henry hit back-to-back baskets at the start of the final quarter to bring the margin to seven, but that was as good as it got for the visitors as the Breakers regained control to hold on for the well deserved victory.

The first-placed Breakers (16-3) will back up in Wollongong against the Hawks on Saturday night, while the Kings (10-10) remain in third place on the ladder and won't be back in action until they travel to Townsville and play the Crocs on February 2.
