Breakers sink 36ers in Adelaide

20 January 2013 06:16

The New Zealand Breakers moved further clear at the top of the NBL ladder with an 84-66 victory over the Adelaide 36ers on Sunday.

After scores were tied at half-time, the Breakers took control of the contest at the start of the third term when they went on a 12-0 run.

That allowed them to open up a decisive 14-point break (62-48) at three-quarter time and the 36ers failed to make any meaningful impression in the final stanza as the Breakers cruised to their 15th victory of the season.

Veteran forward Mika Vukona led the way for the Breakers with 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists, but he received plenty of support.

Guard Daryl Corletto contributed 15 points, while Cedric Jackson (11), Thomas Abercrombie (11) and Leon Henry (10) also played their part in the triumph.

Big man Anthony Petrie top-scored for the 36ers with 19, but Adam Gibson (10) was his only team-mate to join him in scoring in double figures.

The victory means the Breakers improve to 15-3 this season and hold a clear lead at the top of the NBL ladder over the second-placed Perth Wildcats (12-4).

Adelaide drop to 6-12 for the season and their already-slim finals chances are slowly slipping away.
