Crocodiles bite back against Hawks

19 January 2013 12:55

The Townsville Crocodiles returned to winning ways with an 82-74 win over the Wollongong Hawks in the NBL on Saturday.

The Crocs had recorded five victories in succession prior to last week, when they went down by four points at home to the New Zealand Breakers.

But they hit back at the first attempt in Round 15, leading 26-22 at the end of the first quarter and not being headed after that in the match at the Townsville Entertainment Centre.

A strong second period saw the Crocs 49-38 ahead at half-time.

Wollongong stayed in touch throughout the contest, matching their hosts 18-18 in the third quarter and edging the final period 18-15, but it was not enough to reel in the Crocs' commanding early lead.

Gary Ervin led the way for the home team, netting a game-high 26 points.

He was supported by strong returns from Luke Nevill (14 points), Russell Hinder (12) and Peter Crawford (11).

Six Hawks reached double figures in defeat, Oscar Forman top-scoring with 15 points, while Adris Deleon had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Next up for the Crocs is a trip to Perth to take on the Wildcats in Round 16, while the Hawks have a tough encounter at home to the Breakers.
