Harper lifts Nationals with homers, rookie Riddle leads Marlins

When the Washington Nationals are down in the ninth inning, there is one guy they want at the plate and that is Bryce Harper.

Harper bashed his second home run of the game - a three-run effort - in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Nationals to a 6-4 win against the Philadelphia Phillies in MLB on Sunday.

The four-time All-Star and 2015 National League (NL) MVP, who had five RBIs in the game, has been off to a great start this season. He is currently batting .333 with four home runs and 13 RBIs through 12 games, which puts him on pace for some monstrous numbers by the end of the year.

Rookie J.T. Riddle hit a two-run homer with two outs as the Miami Marlins defeated the New York Mets 4-2, while defending champions the Chicago Cubs suffered a 6-1 loss and a series sweep to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Bartolo Colon starred in the Atlanta Braves' 9-2 win against the San Diego Padres, the Toronto Blue Jays and their woes continued following an 11-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, the Boston Red Sox topped the Tampa Bay Rays 7-5, the Los Angeles Dodgers went down 3-1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Colorado Rockies triumphed 4-3 over the San Francisco Giants and the Kansas City Royals blanked the Los Angeles Angels 1-0.

The Cleveland Indians were beaten 4-1 by the Detroit Tigers, the Milwaukee Brewers were 4-2 winners against the Cincinnati Reds, the Minnesota Twins went down 3-1 to the Chicago White Sox, the Seattle Mariners edged the Texas Rangers 8-7, the New York Yankees accounted for the St Louis Cardinals 9-3, while the game between the Houston Astros and the Oakland Athletics was postponed.

Brewers first baseman Eric Thames crushed his fifth home run in four games in a win against the Reds. Thames came into the season having spent the last three campaigns with the NC Dinos in South Korea.

Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini and starting pitcher Dylan Bundy led Baltimore. Mancini went three for five with two home runs and four RBIs. Bundy continued his promising start to the season by tossing six scoreless innings with six strikeouts. He is now 2-1 with a 1.86 ERA this year.

Nationals recruit Adam Eaton went three for five with two runs scored on Sunday, raising his average to .326 for the season. Consistently batting leadoff with Trea Turner injured, Eaton has been able to give the heart of Washington's line-up something to work with on a consistent basis.

Rangers closer Sam Dyson has endured a nightmare start to the season, and he still did not wake up Sunday. Dyson allowed two earned runs off of three hits and two walks in a third of an inning to watch the Rangers lose against the Mariners. Dyson is now 0-3 with a 27.00 ERA this season.

The Marlins rookie - who entered the game as a defensive replacement - made sure his first-career home run was a walk off.

Few would have predicted the Twins to lead Cleveland in the standings even through the first two weeks of the season. Yet, Minnesota's young stars have impressed so far this season, and Ervin Santana has been the best pitcher in MLB. The Indians will send Danny Salazar (0-1, 4.63) to the mound to face off against Kyle Gibson (0-1, 8.00) on Monday.
