Braves acquire Phillips from Reds

13 February 2017 02:41

Brandon Phillips is officially moving on from the Cincinnati Reds to join the Atlanta Braves.

In an anticipated move, the Reds have agreed to a trade that will send their MLB All-Star second baseman to the Braves.

The Reds will acquire left-handed pitcher Andrew McKirahan and right-handed pitcher Carlos Portuondo from the Braves in exchange for Phillips.

"We appreciate Brandon's contributions to our organization," the statement read.

"He excited our fan base and was an important part of several seasons of winning Reds baseball. We wish him well with this opportunity."

Phillips - a three-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove Award winner - vetoed a trade to the Braves in November with his 10-and-5 rights, but apparently has had a change of heart.

He is in the final year of his six-year extension worth $72.5million signed in 2012 and has $14m remaining on his contract.

Phillips slashed .291/.320/.416 with 11 home runs, 64 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in 2016.

The 35-year-old has driven in 134 runs with 37 steals over his last two seasons.
