Longoria pledges future to Rays

27 November 2012 08:46

Third baseman Evan Longoria has signed a contract extension that could keep him at the Tampa Bay Rays until the end of the 2023 season.

Longoria, who was originally contracted until 2016, put pen to paper on six more years for an additional US100 million dollars with a club option for an additional season.

"In signing this contract, I kind of wanted to show that I'm committed to this organisation," Longoria told the Rays website.

"I told them from the beginning that I didn't want to be the one sucking up all the payroll so we can't afford anybody else, because it's not giving us the best chance to win.

"I want to win. If we're not going to be able to put guys around me that are going to help us win, I can't do it by myself.

"One guy can't do it all on his own. It doesn't matter how good you are. You need a team to win."

Longoria, 27, was drafted by the Rays in 2006 and was part of the team that reached the World Series in 2008.

The American played just 74 games last season due to a left hamstring injury, but is expected to be fully fit for spring training in February.

"This is a very exciting day for us, for Evan to have the confidence in us and for us to have the confidence in him for the long haul is quite exciting and we're looking forward to a lot more great things going forward," Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg said.

"Evan has clearly become a cornerstone player and a fixture in our organisation. We are proud of what we have accomplished these past seven years, and I expect the best is yet to come."
